How much does it cost to repair a broken drain?

The cost to repair a broken drain depends on the damage, the depth and length of the affected section, and whether it can be fixed from inside the pipe or must be dug out. A patch repair or relining usually costs far less than excavation and replacement, which is why a CCTV survey comes first.

Drain repairs

What the work involves and how much it disrupts you

Every broken drain repair starts the same way: a camera goes down the pipe. A CCTV drain survey, with sonar pipe location to plot exactly where the fault sits and how deep it runs, tells us whether we are looking at a hairline crack, a displaced joint, root ingress or a collapsed drain. That one step decides how much of your garden, driveway or kitchen floor gets touched.

No-dig drain repair is the least disruptive route. A patch repair seals a short damaged length from inside the pipe, and structural relining forms a new pipe within the old one along a longer run. Both go in through an existing access point. In most homes that means no trench, no lifted paving and the drain back in use the same day.

Excavation is a different job. Where a pipe has collapsed or shifted too far to line, the section has to be dug out and replaced, and new pipe installation takes longer: digging, bedding, laying, testing, backfilling and then surface reinstatement. You may lose use of the drain while the trench is open, and a tarmac drive or block paving above it adds time.

What makes your drain repair dear or cheap

We do not quote a national average here, because it would be wrong for most houses. The levers below are what actually move the price, and knowing them tells you more than any number.

  • The type of damage. A single cracked drain is a different job from a run of displaced joints or a pipe crushed by tree roots.
  • Length and depth. Relining is priced by the run, and a deep pipe needs more digging, more shoring and more time if it has to come up.
  • Access constraints. No inspection chamber, a pipe under an extension or a run beneath a conservatory all change the method available.
  • What sits on top. Lawn is cheap to put back. Patterned paving, poured concrete and tarmac are not, and surface reinstatement is often a large share of an excavation job.
  • The pipe itself. Older clay and pitch fibre pipes behave differently from modern plastic, and some cannot be lined safely.
  • Timing. A drain backing up into the house tonight is handled as an emergency, which costs more than planned work.
  • VAT. Check whether a quote includes it, so you are comparing like with like.

Ask for the survey footage and a written quote that names the method. We give clear written quotes with no surprises, and our engineers will talk you through the footage so you can see the fault yourself.

Who is responsible, and the rules that apply

Before paying for anything, work out whose drain it is. In England, the pipe that serves only your property and sits within your boundary is generally yours. A shared drain serving neighbours, and the lateral sewer running beyond your boundary, generally fall to your local sewerage company. If the fault is on their side, the repair may not be yours to pay for, and the survey footage is the evidence that settles it.

Replacing or altering a drain run can fall under the Building Regulations, specifically Approved Document H, which covers drainage. Like for like repairs usually do not need sign off, but new runs or rerouted pipes may need building control involvement, so ask before work starts.

Safety matters too. Drains carry sewer gas and bacteria, and deep trenches can collapse. Lifting a manhole cover to look is reasonable; climbing in or digging around a pipe yourself is not.

Drain repairs

The signs that tell you where you stand

A blocked drain and a broken one can look alike at first. The difference is what happens after it is cleared. If unblocking fixes it for good, you had a blockage. If it comes back within weeks, the pipe is probably damaged and catching debris.

  • Drainage that slows again soon after jetting
  • Sewage smells outside with no obvious blockage
  • Damp patches on walls or floors near a drain run
  • Sunken paving or a soft patch of lawn over the pipe line
  • Rats around the house, which often use broken drains as a route in
  • Gurgling from sinks or toilets when other fittings drain

Sunken ground and damp walls point towards a collapse or a leak washing soil away, which is more urgent. Recurring slow drainage on its own often means a displaced joint or root ingress, which is usually suited to a no-dig fix. If you are looking for drainage help close to home anywhere in Surrey, London and the South East, there are expert drainage engineers based near you, so getting someone round the same day is normally possible.
